History & Adventure Await in Rock Springs

Rock Springs, Wyoming, offers visitors a wealth of historical knowledge along with an award-winning downtown waiting to be explored. Discover the diverse culture of this charming, high-desert oasis for yourself.

The Story of Rock Springs, Wyoming

Named after a former spring that babbled through town, Rock Springs sprung from the growth and development of the area’s coal-mining industry. In 1868, the coal mined here powered the steam engines of the Union Pacific Railroad, which laid hundreds of miles of track, allowing surrounding towns to thrive. The booming railroad and mining work left behind a culturally rich community that’s represented by 56 nationalities. The railroad’s conversion to diesel and oil power in the mid-1900s drove out many of the city’s coal mines.

Today, although most coal mines are gone, you’ll find a vibrant city that’s known as a local hub for history, dining, shopping and attractions.

Things To Do in Downtown Rock Springs

Rock Springs is the largest city in Sweetwater County. Downtown Rock Springs has a long track record for being a stopping point for everyone from early-day pioneers and bank robbers to modern-day travelers.

Fun Fact: Butch Cassidy earned his nickname working at a butcher shop in downtown Rock Springs! He also spent time in the jail, now the Rock Springs Historical Museum.

You can nosh on everything from all-American fare at Broadway Burger Station to authentic dishes at Casa Chavez Mexican Restaurant. A Rock Springs landmark since the 1930s, Boschetto’s European Market & Deli was founded by Ben Boschetto, who immigrated to Rock Springs from northern Italy.

Remedies Grill is a blast-from-the-past soda fountain and retro-style diner. Get your daily jolt of caffeine at spots like Java Peddler, a unique barista business in a bike shop, or Coal Train Coffee Depot, run out of the historic train depot. Enjoy a refreshing brew or cocktail during happy hour at local favorites. For after-dinner drinks, the Park Lounge serves up spirits with a smile and even hosts live local music.

The exhibits emphasize local coal mining and multi-national heritage. The museum also has a self-guided walking tour of the historic downtown that is a favorite of history buffs.
