Sandboard and Sand Sleds Available in Southwest Wyoming

Surf or sled the Killpecker Sand Dunes with your very own sandboard or sled, now available for purchase at the Explore Rock Springs & Green River Visitor Center. Hit the slopes for a bucket-list experience at one of the world’s largest active sand dune fields.

THE EQUIPMENT

The boards are similar to snowboards, with two foot holds and curved edges, while the sleds are like winter downhill sleds. Surfing and sledding the dunes is a popular way to experience the unique landscape without expensive ATVs.

Sandboards and sleds are $209*, which includes one board or sled, board wax and a safety flag. An adjustable helmet is also available for purchase, $42 each. Buy your boards and sleds in-person at the Visitor Center in Rock Springs.

THE DUNES

Located north of Rock Springs, Wyoming, the Killpecker Sand Dunes are a can’t-miss experience in Southwest Wyoming. The soft sandy slopes can reach up to 100-feet high and the landscape is punctuated by towering rock formations in the form of buttes and spires, like the famous Boars Tusk spire.

Surfers and sledders play in The Killpecker Sand Dunes Open Play Area. To get there from Rock Springs, take U.S. 191 about 10 miles to the north. Turn right at CR 4-18 (at the sign that reads Petroglyphs, Sand Dunes, Boar’s Tusk), and then turn left at CR 4-17.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Take caution as the dunes are a hub for ATVs. Stay alert, use caution and be aware of your surroundings, and use flags to make others aware of your location.

This is a true “off the grid” experience, cell service is limited. Make sure you have extra water, and a high clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle with thick tires (and a spare) to traverse the dirt roads. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. DO NOT drive street vehicles onto the sand dunes.

WHERE TO EAT & SLEEP

Rest up in comfortable hotels (don’t miss these lodging specials) or camp out at the dunes themselves at The Killpecker Sand Dune Open Play Area Campground. Refuel with good eats in Rock Springs and Green River–and be sure to pack enough food for your off the grid excursion.
